Les Idiolithes

EP7, 133 Avenue de France, Paris
September 03 - September 16, 2021

The end of june EX-MÊKH was suddenly invited to take part in an exhibition in Paris by KRAATZ, an international artists collective with which we worked together in Berlin earlier. A German artist was also invited, Sabine Bürger from Essen. It was all about showing video on the front of EP7, a multifunctional building at the hypermodern Avenue de France. Sixteen screens have been mounted on the façade of the building on which the video’s would be shown. KRAATZ was going to show ‘Les Idiolithes’, which was made on the invitation of EX-MÊKH to show on the occasion of Platforms Project NET 2021 in Athens. In this video the members of KRAATZ elaborate on a heavy stone from  Provence which Kees Koomen left in Berlin after using it for the EX-MÊKH exhibition ‘Femaler’ that we did for A-Trans. During the opening-weekend performances could be done and the stone would be returned to the rightful owner.

The star of this weekend!

EX-MÊKH decided to show their video ‘Stage Arousal’, which was already shown at the Athens fair, and to perform during the weekend. Things would be prepared during holidays. The first day started with Forbes Morlock with ‘Conversation with a Stone about Freud’s Correspondence about Stones’. He held an absurd interview with the stone about its opinion on Sigmund Freud’s travels to the Dolomites, the Harz Mountains, Rome and Athens and his experiences with stone.

After a short break KRAATZ’s Yorgos Dimitriades took his turn to have a musical dialogue with the stone with the title ‘Sounding the stone’, using percussion instruments and electronics.

At 20.00 h the video’s started on the screens on the facade of EP7. A fair amount of public came to the street and it was spectacular to see the work on which we had been working intensely in cold winter time shown in a warm avenue in Paris like this:

And the stone stays behind a bit orphaned

August 4, 2021

On this second night KRAATZ first held workshops ‘Idioliths’. At 19.30 h the ritual returning of the stone took place. The stone passed through the hands of every member of KRAATZ and those of EX-MÊKH who put it in a bag designated for the occasion. In this way the responsibility for the stone and possible future activities is for EX-MÊKH again. Before the stone went into the bag Kees Koomen took the stone and performed ‘The Weight’, an action he showed before on the Malieveld. In this case it emphasised the before mentioned responsibilities.

EX-MÊKH secures the stone

After a short break Kees Koomen performed ‘Sentiers d’été’. In this performance the stone was immediately used again. Five sheets of paper and materials were put on the floor in a circle. Four sheets were white and one was black. The stone lay on the side. The performer started to roll the stone around the circle with which the wooden floor gave a percussive sound. After one round the performer stopped at the sheet with half a baguette and started to pound that to pieces on the stone with a smaller stone. After this he covered the sheet with glue and poured the bread pieces on it. Then he wrote a text on the sheet.

Arriving at the second stone he started to make a new drawing with the materials next to it and so forth and so forth. At the fourth sheet a woman lay on a beach towel. He rolled the stone over her and started to make a drawing on the sheet next to it with oilstick. He observed the woman and rolled the stone another full circle and rolled it over the woman again. He observed her again and made a drawing in charcoal like a dark shadow over the first drawing. At the last black sheet performer put on sunglasses and drew stars on the black. After this he wrote ‘sharing darkness’ in dark blue oil stick and ‘instead of fear we party’ with bright orange oil stick on it. He rolled the stone forward to the original position and went back to his chair.

After another break Ellen Rodenberg took the floor to invite the public to participate in an EX-MÊKH workshop: she put square sheets of paper on the floor which were painted with colourful abstract forms on them. She asked participants to take the markers she had laying aside and to try and improve the painted sheets. The participants started with enthusiasm and were disappointed when Ellen told them to stop. Sheets were put back in a square and the composition caused some discussion. After this the weekend was closed officially and continuing downtown we saw our beds quite late!
